Grant D.  Sprague KC, ICD.D

Grant has extensive executive experience in policy, regulatory systems and governance in the natural resource, energy and environment spheres.

Serving as Alberta’s Deputy Minister for Energy over seven years, Grant led developing and implementing natural resource policies. In this role and previous senior positions, Grant’s role was providing strategic advice to the highest levels of government. Given his range of experience and understanding of the natural resource and environment systems, Grant was often called upon to assist in complex challenges.

During his earlier legal career, Grant advised on a broad range of legal issues, ranging from property disputes, insolvency to administrative law litigation, both inside and outside of government. As the Assistant Deputy Minister for Civil Law, Grant was responsible for the provision of all civil law advice to the Government of Alberta.

As a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors program, Grant has served as Chair of the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Board, a Director of the Alberta Energy Regulator and a Director of Atlantik Bruecke Canada.

Grant has been a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta School of Business teaching courses on environmental law for undergraduates and courses within the Masters of Business Administration programs on government relations.

In 2023, Grant was appointed as a Senior Fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute, one of Canada’s most respected think tanks and participates in the Institute’s Energy Council as well as producing occasional papers. He is currently counsel with Blue Rock Law, a business law firm in Calgary.

  • Deputy Chief, Policy Coordination responsible for briefing the Premier and Deputy Premier on all substantive policy matters across all areas of policy for the Government of Alberta and assisting in the establishment of governance mechanisms

  • Assistant Deputy Minister of Legal Services responsible for all civil law advice to the Government of Alberta from children services to constitutional law

  • Lawyer with extensive experience providing counsel and representation on a broad range of environmental and natural resources matters
